The liquid matters less than how long the muesli sits in it. Toasted muesli wants eating soon after the milk goes on, while it still has its crunch. Raw muesli wants 5–10 minutes to soften. Soaked muesli sits overnight in the fridge.
The variables
- Milk or oat milk. The everyday choice. Oat milk is a little sweet, which suits it.
- Yogurt. Thick and tangy. Thin it with a splash of milk if you’re soaking with it.
- Juice. Apple or orange juice for soaking, which sweetens it without added sugar.
- Time. 0–5 minutes for toasted, 5–10 for raw, 8–12 hours for soaked.
Options
| Option | Pick it when | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Milk, poured and eaten | Toasted muesli | Crunchy; eat it straight away |
| Milk, left 10 minutes | Raw muesli | Soft, with a little chew left |
| Yogurt on top | You want it richer | Spoon it over toasted muesli, or stir it through soaked |
| Soaked overnight | Bircher or overnight oats | About 1 to 1½ parts liquid to 1 part oats by volume |
