Knotty Irishman

Mechanic

The drink is 4 : 2 : 1 : 8 Baileys, whiskey, Frangelico, and coffee, in 15 ml (½ oz) parts, with the cream floated on top. The cream floats only if it’s whipped just enough to hold soft trails: liquid cream sinks and mixes into the coffee, and stiff cream sits on top in a lump. Pour it over the back of a spoon so it lands gently.

Ingredients

  • 60 ml (2 oz) Baileys, or Homemade Baileys Irish cream
  • 30 ml (1 oz) Dead Rabbit Irish whiskey, or another Irish whiskey
  • 15 ml (½ oz) Frangelico
  • 120 ml (½ cup) hot strong coffee
  • 60 ml (¼ cup) whipping cream (35%)
  • Nutmeg, for grating

Method

Warm a 300 ml (10 oz) glass mug with hot water, then empty it. Add the Baileys, whiskey, and Frangelico, then the hot coffee, and stir.

Whisk the cream in a small jar or bowl until it thickens and just holds soft trails, about 30 seconds. Pour it over the back of a spoon onto the coffee. Grate nutmeg over the top.

Variations

Over ice. Use 120 ml (½ cup) cold brew or chilled coffee. Fill a rocks glass with ice, add the Baileys, whiskey, Frangelico, and coffee, and stir until the glass is cold. Float the cream the same way, or pour it in unwhipped and let it swirl through. Grate nutmeg over the top.

Notes
