I am not a chef. I spent time in restaurants in the late 1980s and early 1990s, learning how fast-casual and family-owned restaurants worked. I prepped. I cleaned. I worked the line. I managed for a bit. I toyed with the idea of a career in the industry, but was pulled away to an internship in tech.
We had kids, and we ate simply when they were young. Our cooking evolved, and we started cooking from scratch. We watched a lot of food television: Good Eats, Iron Chef, Bourdain, and the various travelling food shows. We tried more recipes, bought cookbooks, and slowly we learned.
And then one day it clicked. Those college years in restaurants, the explanations by TV chefs, and the hours of watching chefs work all made sense. I learned how to properly dice onions, to set my mise en place, to prepare sauces, bases, and full meals. It was a lot of fun discovering technique and authentic flavours, and learning how flavours have evolved by culture and time. Learning to cook, and cooking for family and friends, became one of my reasons for existing.
And now I love to cook. It’s an obsession. It’s cathartic. It’s fulfilling. I’m glad I stuck with it.
The recipes here are the foods we eat. They span cooking styles from the 1950s through today, with a focus on food memories, discoveries, and traditions new and old.
The archives
We started our collection of recipes on paper, in a few binders. It lived in those flour-dusted binders for decades, until lockdown, when we digitized the recipes into Google Docs. This year I turned that collection of documents into this site.

A small collection of food we’ve made over the years.
